The trophies we have selected for the 2006 National Specialty exemplify the beauty and character of Colorado and the lovely aspen trees for which the state is known. Many of the prizes will be decorative and functional art glass pieces hand made by Colorado Artists, David and Donna Cuin. Their Aspen Suite series exhibits the spectral glow of iridized glass in dark blue-greens and deep purple, which burn with an inner fire in bright light. The use of dichroic glass and 14k gold for the aspen leaf motif, which characterizes this series, provides a dramatic color complement which changes from a deep orange to pale yellow with changing angles of view and lighting. Another Colorado artist featured is Sandy Early, who creates unique aspen vases from paper clay. Paper clay is a form of clay that uses paper in the mixture. When the piece is fired in the raku process, the paper burns out and you are left with a lightweight piece of pottery. Sandy designs each vase to be a unique creation resembling the aspens found throughout Colorado. We are also excited to offer carvings by Jonathan Bastian and hand painted pottery by Oak Hill pottery.
