Como (aka Jefferson) Colorado Back to Back Pack Hike Saturday and Sunday August 8th & 9th
Hike Fee: $10 for participants
Please RSVP by August 5th to Alison (link above)
Weigh In: 9:30 AM Saturday at the Como Depot, and 9:00 AM Sunday at the Pinto Trail location. Start times are 10AM and 9:30AM respectively.
The Trail: 9 miles Saturday with a 1,000 foot elevation change, and 8 miles Sunday. Saturday can be a single leg.
The Gold Dust trail on Saturday is a moderate to difficult hike that is 4.5 miles in and then back out. It is the southern section of an 8 mile one way trail. Beginning at the southern end of the trail at an elevation of 9,950 feet, the route is steep for the first mile. After reaching an elevation of 10,400' the trail continues to climb, but less steeply than before. The path then descends into South Tarryall Creek drainage. The trail crosses that creek then 2 others before reaching County Road 50 and the Upper Gold Dust Trailhead. The highest elevation is 11,200 about mid-way through the hike. The trail is a single track among thick forest, creating nice shade for about 90% of the hike. There are a few water areas at the beginning and the end of the hike. There are a few rocky areas and steep switchbacks. The trail is not very populated except an occasional mountain bike. The Pinto Trail consists of two 4 mile moderate loops on dirt county road with some shade. Starting elevation is 9,700 feet, with some gain and loss throughout the hike. Wonderful vistas and a shaded rest area for lunch with facilities.
Weather: Morning temperatures will be in the low 40's, rising to the mid 60's. Rain showers are always possible, so pack some rain gear. Since the trail is dense forest, bug spray is also recommended. Sturdy hiking shoes, pants or shorts, and layers for the ever changing high altitude weather is needed.
Additional Information: Dogs must be leashed at the trail heads. All walkers will receive a prize. Hikers should pack plenty of water and snacks.
Please review information and requirements at: http://gsmdca.org under activities and packing.
